Ring in 2020 by Spending Less on Rx Drugs! FamilyWize, UW Can Help

A powerful partnership involving United Way of Jackson County has saved local residents $993,997 on prescription medications since 2007.

FamilyWize, a community service organization, works with United Ways across the country to lower the cost of prescription medications for local individuals and families. In 2019 alone, Jackson County residents saved $76,449 on their medicines through the FamilyWize partnership with United Way of Jackson County.

“Our United Way tackles poverty in Jackson County, and the cost of medicines is one common factor that can send struggling families into poverty,” said Ken Toll, President and CEO of United Way of Jackson County.

People with low incomes often must choose between medicines and food, Toll added. “No one should have to make that choice,” he said

The FamilyWize program provides discount cards that help people save an average of 43 percent on their prescription medications. The card is free and available to anyone, with no eligibility requirements. The FamilyWize card is accepted at more than 60,000 pharmacies nationwide and covers all FDA-approved prescription medications. Since 2005, FamilyWize has helped 11 million Americans save more than $1 billion on the cost of medicines.

Health care costs are one of the leading causes of bankruptcy; up to two-thirds of all bankruptcy filings are tied to medical expenses or loss of income due to being out of work because of health issues. An estimated 530,000 American families turn to bankruptcy each year due to these costs.

Toll said that means quality, affordable health care must be a key component in building a financially stable community.

“We’re thrilled to partner with FamilyWize to help all families in Jackson County afford the medicines they need,” Toll said.

The FamilyWize Prescription Saving Card is available for free at United Way of Jackson County’s office, 536 N. Jackson St. in Jackson.
